The dynamics
Please, take a good look at this model of the dynamics in all choice processes (as I know it from my experience).

Let's first zoom in on the process, look into the elements of the whole dynamics, as they always work, in any direction of development you decide to take.
Your Longings
People like Abraham Maslow and Virginia Henderson have observed that human beings have needs.
They made inventories of human needs.
They observed that the human beings's overall wellbeing, their sum total of their physical and mental health ... benefits from those needs being met.
Take a look at any of those lists and you'll observe that there are:
both...
Your conscious, your knowing
Your (sub-) consciousness gets moment-to-moment reports on how well it goes with fullfilling all those needs.
You feel well, if all goes well.
When any of those processes need your conscious involvement, you'll get a signal.
To make sure you ' get the message' it is:
Your inner knowing knows (by years of experience) precisely how quickly you usually respond to which strength and type of signals, knows at all times where you physically are right now , what the quality and availability of the required resources is there and can estimate/calculate how long it willl take you to support the system, supplying the requested (needed!) resources of good quality.
So your knowing (of which a lot is subconscious) communicates with your consious mind, using both thoughts and feelings.
Your choices
Your knowing can (if you choose to) communicate also suggestions to the palette of choice in your concious mind.
It can (if you so choose) produce all information, tailormade, dynamically ' on the fly', keeping a close eye on both.... all your needs as well as..... all your currently available resources, in you and around you.
Your senses have picked up clues on what is present in your (both material and energetical) environment.
Yes, a lot of that is kept far under the treshold of your conscious awareness...
It is far too much information to process consciously!
So you are being 'drip-fed', on moments when you can actually do something with it, known to be important information on occurances that are usuefull for you to take into account, given where you are and where you desire to be going.
It is always linking ' importance' ' to fullfilling your needs and desires, to your highest known choices on what you consider (have chosen and are chosing, given your your current energy investments) to be important in life, to you.
You'll get suddenly an ' idea', or a 'nudge' , or your attention is drawn to an object or an event.....
Those occurances stem from your knowing, adding an option to the palette of choice.

- personal, individual needs
- intra-personal needs, social needs

Your (sub-) consciousness gets moment-to-moment reports on how well it goes with fullfilling all those needs.
You feel well, if all goes well.
When any of those processes need your conscious involvement, you'll get a signal.
To make sure you ' get the message' it is:
- slightly annoying and uncomfortable
orange alert.... when it is not so urgent yet, but you would benefit from being alert on possibilities to satisfy this need fairly soon, because resources are moving towards the point where they do need filling up. - highly disturbing and uncomfortable
red alert... when there is no sign of the necessary supplies being provided and the proces for which something is needed is really suffering now... or has stopped functioning completely, because of 'lack' of the necessary resources.

The dynamics of limited 'send' equals ... 'limited' receive.....
- Let's have a look now on how these dynamics work in a modern day human being.
- Let's take a person who has chosen, maybe even without knowing it, simply by following cultural customs and keeps chosing to use a fairly limited palette of choice.
- Let's say ( because I observe it to be a very common mindset)... there is a real strong preference for:
Just as a thought..... why not call this person ' you' , here?
Your MIND has the capacity to give both attention to occurences in the outside world (material word) and occurences in the inner world of thoughts and feelings ( the world of energy in motion).
You can do that consciously simultaniously ( you are always doing it sub-consciously simultaniously) , but easier is to alternate frequently... shift your attention regularly from inwardly to outwardly and back:
"What is present in the material world and how do I feel in relation to it, what do I then do with the material/energy."
You can chose to give attention either to your outside world...... or......to your own thoughts and feelings, here and now.
You can chose to do that for a long period of time. (4 hours in a 24 hour day, of which you sleep approximately 8 hours, is already ' a long time' in relation to the natural lenght of various processes going on in and around you)
You can then chose to observe how 'well' you feel, after a while of focussing completely on the outside world.
My guess on how such an experiment goes.....?
You have not paid enough (appropriate.... as in... acting upon it adequately) attention to the accumulating list of orange alerts in your inner world.
You'll be suddenly aware after these 4 hours of an urgent total lack situation with almost no energy left to do something (meaningful) about it.
You are: ..... hungry ........ grumpy....... irritable......... tired...... thirsty....... with a sore tummy, stiff and painful muscles... angry with yourself... sad and disappointed in what life supplies you with. You are experiencing all sorts of ' lack'.
In the 4 hours you were so busy focussing on doing outward activities, you have missed a great deal of healthy, timely, peaceful, harmonious signals to indicate it is recommendable to start seizing oppertunities to do something about fullfilling (upcoming) needs.
Simply because of not chosing to give (frequently) enough attention to these constantly broadcasted signals , from your knowing, in time.
You then, after these four hours, in the shape and state you are in, are likely to chose to act upon the ones that shout the loudest, with the first thing that comes to hand, to end these high levels of discomfort..
---- sounds familiair? I'll continue using ' you' than. ----
Do that a while and you are feeding your knowing with your behavioural patterns on what you consider important in life and how important your consicous mind choses to consider it to respond timely to these inner signals.
This choice might not be in your ' best interest' ( serving your long term wellbeing really well) , but if that's what you chose to 'like' and 'find important' in life, than that's what you'll get more of.
You (chose to) only respond to 'big scary waves' and 'senses of lack'?
OK.... if that is what is required to get your consious mind to support the system with actions to fill up supplies.... you'll be on permanent sense of lack and scared, most of the time..... even when things are objectively running quite smoothly.
(Compare: When it is clear that a manager only responds to e-mails with a red flag, written in bold capitals with flashy animations....... he'll find before long that all his incoming e-mails contain red flags, bold capitals and flashy animations.
No wonder this manager is thinking he is constantly fire-fighting only major crisis all the time. Why would he.. and how could he... ever respond to anything spoken in a soft voice, under such an avalange of constant cries for his immediate attention....?)
